ENJOYING HIMSELF
REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD. REPORT FROM ADVANCE POST. [WORK AT LITTLE AMERICA. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 11, 8.15 a.m. . MONTREAL, May 9. A message from Little America says that to-morrow Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd completes six weeks’ isolation at his advance post. Ho has continued to report that all is well, with the temper -.ature ranging from 24 to 61 degrees below zero. He is at times suffering from the intense cold. Yesterday, Admiral Byrd declared ever the radio: “I am heating the stove economically to save fuel and the shack is only 20 degrees above zero. It is quite cold at the telegraph key; however, I am used to that now. There is wonderful peace and quiet in a place like this and I am enjoying myself—besides, meteorological observations keep me busy. I have had considerable trouble with the instruments, but they are still running. I am also perfecting plans for the spring operations. The expedition must be ready to start and all the units involved in the Easter southern operations mutt be prepared to take the field with the first good weather in October.” At the camp the expedition has finished its most fascinating building project, the dog “town” being completed so that 126 huskies have dwellings dug under. Each is chained in a crate something like a cell, in a long row. The dogs consume 600 pounds of Beal carcase for each meal.
