John Mably, aged eleven, died in the Ashburton Hospital from internal injuries resulting from a fall off a bicycle at Mayfield. The boy was sitting on the bar of a bicycle ridden by another boy, who fell on him.
The largest number of applications for reinstatement to the Rugby Union game from Rugby League that the New Zealand Rugby Union has had at one time was dealt with at last night’s meeting of the management committee. The majority of the 113 applications came from Auckland and Wellington, but Canterbury, the AA 7 est Coast and North Auckland figured prominently on the list.
The Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre has given F. J. Grose first preference as a representative at the Empire Games. The Dunedin City Council, at a special meeting last night, decided to increase the hospital and drainage rates by Id in the £1 each, bringing the total to 4s 7d. The council also decided to restore 2] per cent, of the 10 per cent, cut in wages and salaries. That death was due to coronary thrombosis was the verdict of the Coroner, Mr E. Gilbertson, at the inquest on Mr George Alpe, the well-known Wellington athlete, who 'died at his residence on Sunday. The body of a male native, which is thought to bo that of Mr Maketu Wereta, aged 38, married, who has been missing since an upturned boat was discovered four miles out to sea off the Waitotara River mouth on April 6, was found on Tuesday by Messrs George Holmes and William Davis, two young men of Waverley, who were out shooting. It was in an advanced state of decomposition and identification will be difficult. Arising out of an accident, Leslie Churchill, of Kaiwarra, minor, was, in the Supreme Court at Wellington yesterday, awarded £250 general damages and special damages as agreed between the parties from Thomas Johnson, of Johnsonville.
