UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
■ANGLICAN SYNOD’S VIEW. BETTER SYSTEM SOUGHT. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, April 19. The problem of unemployment in New Zealand was considered at length all day to-day by the general Anglican Synod, which is at present sitting in Napier, during the course of a debate on a motion moved by Bishop WestWatson (Christchurch), urging the Government to substitute sustenance grants in place of the present methods of unemployment relief. The Synod finally accepted an amendment by Archdeacon Fitchett (Dunedin), to the effect that the Government be urged to substitute more satisfactory methods of combating the problem. Many members spoke for and against the motion, some being of the opinion that the Church, as represented by the Synod, should not interfere with a problem which was the care of the Government. Some felt that the Synod should not pass a motion, on the grounds that it favoured the views of a particular political party. The Amendment which was adopted read as follows: That this Synod urges upon the Government that the continued prevalence of unemployment on a large scale demands the substitution of more satisfactory unemployment relief, also that copies of this resolution he sent to the Prime Minister, the Minister concerned, and the Unemployment Board.
