LAWN TENNIS.
PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB. The final of the men’s championship singles of the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club was decided yesterday afternoon when D. I. Robertson beat V. Wehipeihana in two sets, B—6,8 —6, 6—2. The match was characterised by beautiful passing shots on the part of Wehipeihana, and Robertson repeatedly being left standing. Robertson’s base-line shots and placements were, however, too consistently good for Wehipeihana. Conditions were overcast and dull and the court sodden. Wehipeihana captured the first game on his service. Robertson equalled on his and then gained a lead of 3 —2. Wehipeihana took the next two games to make the score 4—3. Robertson then scored on liis service and captured Wehipeihana’s to love, but he dropped the next two games, being hopelessly caught out of position in attempting to take the net. He gained his service to equal at 6—6. The next game marked a series of rallies, Wehipeihana being forced to assume the defensive and Robertson taking the game after deuce had been called five times. Robertson serving strongly took the next game to love and the set. Robertson proved too consistent in the second set, although there was not a great margin in points. Wehipeihana played his best game of the season and his was the more brilliant tennis. Robertson’s success gives him the title for the second consecutive year. There was added merit in his performance this season by reason of the fact that, although in indifferent health, he went through the competition retaining his two lives.
