BULLS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS, Auril 18. There was a email but representative meeting of householders at Bulls on Monday evening. Mr A. C. Lane, whose term of office in Bulls will end this year, declined nomination, and Mr D. O’Connell was proposed to fill the vacancy on the committee. There being no further nominations, the following were declared elected: —Messrs S. Rich (chairman), L. V. Homes, W. Dean, D. O’Connell, Joseph Ellery, F. F. Ralfe and H. H. C. Holland. Mr Homes was appointed secretary. At the conclusion of the meeting a social evening was held, at which Mrs R. Hannah and Mr L. Y. Homes won mo6t games at euchre. The chairman’s report stated, inter alia: —The school roll now stands at 114, and owing to sickness the attendance during the year has been low. The school finances are in a healthy state. Three years ago the liability was approximately £l2O, but this has been reduced to £l2. The capitation grant has been reduced from £63 to £SO, and all school requisites hitherto found by the Education Department, free, have to be provided by the committee. This alone has meant a loss of £lB to the school this year. The committee has been desirous of doing more for the children, but finances would not permit. The financial position has been improved by means of euchre parties, a school concert and ball. Euchre parties brought in a nett profit of £9 6s 6d; the concert £l3 6s lOd; and the ball was also an outstanding success. Regret is expressed at the death of Mrs J. Button, who always took a keen interest in the ball and in school affairs. After two postponements the school picnic was held on the Domain on March 17. The school grounds are in splendid condition, and will not require a great deal of expenditure to keep them in order. Trees were planted on Arbor Day. The inspectors’ report for the year proved very good, and 12 out of 13 presented gained proficiency certificates. Thanks are due to Mr Fred Thorby for tho keen interest taken in the woodwork classes, the pupils’ progress being very gratifying. Thanks are also due to the staff for their wholehearted support of, and co-operation with, the headmaster during the past year. The school football team was not very successful. The girls’ basketball team won all matches played, thanks to Miss Button’s efficient coaching. The school team gained second honours at Marton in the combined schools’ A grade competition, threo pupils being successful in gaining points certificates. Calf rearing competitions saw the school enter for the first time, and gain Ist, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the group competition. There are five mangold plots at the school, all alfc looking well, but the competition has not been judged yet. In conclusion he chairman paid a tribute to Mr J. Campion, and thanked the committee for their support during the year. Thero was a large attendance at the householders’ meeting at Ohakea, and great interest was taken in the election of a committee, for which there were 13 nominations. The following were elected: Messrs F. O. Bailey (chairman), H. Ellery (secretary), J. Capstick, A. Hartley and L. Sadler. A social and dance followed, tho successful card players being Mr and Mrs J. Simpson, with Mr D. Capstick run-ner-up. There was a fairly good attendance at Parewanui and the following were elected to the school committee: —Messrs J. Montgomerie (chairman), W. Hart (secretary), L. Sanson, 0. Reid and W. Brown. No householders’ meeting was held at Glyneath, but Messrs W. Guy and T. W. Field will carry on the school business as last year.
