EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” APRIL 19, 1904. For the first time in 400 years a mixed choir had been heard at the Vatican in the performance of two works, said a Rome message. Professor Kirk was firmly of the opinion that a large export trade in apples from New Zealand could be worked up if Government assistance were given. For two or three years he had urged that action be taken. A beautiful limestone cave had been found in the Tachnor Valley, 18 miles from Motuoka. It contained moa. bones. A deputation had waited on the AVanganui Education Board asking that a school be opened in the Carnarvon hall. The request was granted. When interviewed on his return to London, P. F. Warner, who had captained an English cricket eleven on a tour of Australia, said that Noble was the best all-round Australian player. Some 5000 people welcomed the English team home. Russian light-heartedness at the opening of the war with Japan had given way to gloom as the true position of the defeat of the navy and the inadequacy of the trans-Siberian railway became known. Russia was not able to feed her troops and tons of ammunition were delayed along the railway. Large numbers of horses were to be offered at a sale in Palmerston North. One firm was advertising 100 thoroughbreds as a section of its catalogue. The British expedition had advanced well into Tibet. The leader, Colonel Younghusband, had met opposition from the monks who had joined the fighters.
