TE ARAKURA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AIIAKURA, April 18. The annual meeting of householders took place on Monday evening in the schoolroom. Mr J. Hume presided over a small attendance. The balance-sheet, which was read and adopted, showed that in the general fund the receipts were £6l 7s and expenditure £52 7s 9d, the balance being £8 19s 3d. The special fund receipts were £l7 10s 7d, expenditure £l2 18s 2d, and the balance £4 12s sd. The chairman’s report read as follows: This year, as in the jiast, it has been tho committee’s desire to uphold the good name of tho school, and the activities have been guided by the financial position. A new iron fence has been erected around part of the front of the school, and one of tho play-sheds has been shifted to a more suitable position. The school picnic, which was held this year under somewhat different arrangements than in the past, namely, tho amalgamation with tho local Women’s Institute, proved a great success. Mr Hume remarked on tho valuable work of the dental clinic and stated that a large number of children woro already enrolled. The report of the head teachor (Miss jsa.iley) stated that it had been a pleasure to hand in another successful year's report on school work. The roll number had kept, up well, there being always just over sixty children. There were at present 62 pupils on the roll. They had suffered from a 6evero epidemic of measles and whooping cough at the end of 1933, when the attendance went down to about one fifth of the roll number. This, however, did not affect the grading, as the previous terms counterbalanced it. The progress of the classes has been quite satisfactory. Miss Bailey thanked the outgoing committee for their good work and keen interest in the affairs of the school. It was decided to recommend to tho incoming committee that an improvement be made to tho approach from tho road to the front gate of the school. Mr Tlume expressed thanks to the residents of tho district, and the teachers for their willing assistance and cooperation, enabling the committee to carry out their duties to tho best advantage to all concerned. It was moved by Mr Hansen and seconded by Mr Bennett that the meeting place on record its appreciation of the very vaiuablo services of the head teacher (Miss Bailey) and the assistant teacher (Miss Parker). It was proposed by Mr Lawton and seconded by Mr Cleaver that the present committee bo re-elected unopposed. This was carried. The committee, consisting of Messrs Hume, Thomas, Hansen, Bennett, and Firth, retired to elect their officers. Mr ITiirno was re-elected chairman, Mr Hansen secretary and treasurer. Messrs Hume and Thomas were re-elected ns delegates to tho Combined School Committees’ Association, also to be tho school’s representatives on the Dental Clinics Committee.
