PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, April 18. From the Secretary to the Treasury, the Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) has received the following letter relative to the question of relief to persons who suffered loss or damage as a result of the earthqua.ke on March 5 last: “It has been decided to grant financial assistance by way of loans on easy terms to repair earthquake damage in necessitous cases and for this purpose a. committee has been set up in Wellington to deal with the applications. The committee consists of the Minister of Finance, the Undersecretary, Public Works Department, the Under-Secretary for Lands, and the Secretary to the Treasury. An immediate start is being made with the preliminary work, and forms of application will be available within the next few days.” At a meeting of the executive committee of the Pahiatua R.S.A. Mr M. R. Lawson (president) occupied the chair. It was decided to support the Auckland branch in its representations to headquarters for better treatment for unemployed returned soldiers. It was reported that a deputation comprising Mr M. R. Lawson and Dr. H. Paterson had waited upon the Pahiatua County Council with a request for a piece of” land where unemployed returned soldiers could be profitably employed planting trees. A letter was received from Mr J. Hutton, county clerk, intimating that his council had considered the matter and it would endeavour to procure a piece of land on the banks of the Mangatainoka River immediately below the town bridge. If successful in its endeavour the council further agreed to pay the cost of the necessary survey. The secretary was instructed to thank the council for its generous action. Two applications to make good household damage were received from members of the R.S.A. It was decided to forward same to the Red Cross Society. A report was received that two applications for permanent pensions' had been successful. At a meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers’ Union the president (Mr G. H. Hodd) ocupied the chair and there was a representative attendance of members. On the motion of Mr J. H. Bremner, seconded by Mr H. Cotter, it was decided to organise the mangold growing and_ ensilage competitions this year on similar lines to last year. The mangold growing competition will be judged between June 1 and June 20, and the ensilage competition in June and August. The secretarv was instructed to circularise all likely competitors at the end of May.
