EDUCATION BOARD

1 REPORTS TO MEETING, The monthly meeting of the AVanganui Education Board was held yesterday, Mr E. E. Hemingway presiding. Others present were Messrs R. Dukeson, J. S. Tingey, J. Iv. Hornblow, P. Munro, J. Aitken, AV. T. Benefield and Colonel J. H. AVhyte. The chairman reported that he had conferred with the secretary- and architect regarding the list of urgent works for the 1934-35 year. The chief agricultural instructor s report for the month is as follows: “Schools have been regularly visited during the period, and advice given on schemes and garden work generally. In some few cases it has been found necessary to check a. tendency to commence the indoor science work too early, to the detriment of the work possible out of doors at this season. Even where crops have failed it is always possible to get sundry veiy valuable agricultural lessons arising therefrom. “In the larger schools a more extensive course in allied sciences is being attempted, a.nd, though the present equipment precludes the possibility of very ambitious instruction, it is possible to arrange plenty of work quite suitable to the ages of the children of Forms 1 and 2, with intelligent improvisation oil the part of the teacher. AVhere convenient the plots of the clubs are visited in conjunction with the ordinary work. Generally these are in good order. The supply of tools is being augmented as far a.s is possible, and the necessary seeds are being distributed for autumn plant--IHThe board’s architect reported that all the danger presented by . earthquake damage to chimneys, 80 in number, had, with the exception of two cases, been removed. Immediate atten tion to these two was being arranged. The necessary attention to the eartnquake damage had to a great extent disorganised ordinary maintenance works.
