NEW BASIC WAGE.
DECISION IN AUSTRALIA. MELBOURNE, April 17. Chief Judge Dethridge and Judge Drake-Brockman, of the Federal Arbitration Court, issued a majority decision on the unions’ application for rescission of the ten per cent, emerfency cut. The cut is abolished and new asic rates operate as from May 1 as follow: In State and metropolitan areas: Sydney, 675, a rise of seven pence; Melbourne 645, a rise of eight pence; Brisbane 61s, a rise of Is 8d; Adelaide 645, a rise of 3s lid; Perth 66s a rise of 6s 9d; Hobart 675, a rise of 2s Bd. The judgment affects about 600,000 employees. The basic wage outside metropolitain areas is three shillings less than in the respective capitals except Newcastle, which is the same as Sydney and Geelong, where the rate is 635. Special provisions are inserted in the judgment to cover certain State services.
Judge Beeby, in a separate judgment, thought that the wage should be related to production rather than to the cost of living and that the awards should have been more substantial, suggesting: Sydney 695, Melbourne 65s 6d, Adelaide 635, Brisbane 655, Perth 655, Hobart 665.
