THE SUSTENANCE SCHEME

LOCAL CONDITIONS. Commencing from the week ending April 21, approximately 120 men at present employed under relief scheme No. sby the Palmerston North City Council will be stood down and paid sustenance. The scheme will operate so that each relief worker will receive three weeks’ work and one week’s sustenance, in every four, it is stated by the local unemployment officer (Mr W. H. Cadwallader). Although only 120 men will be affected at the outset, it is expected that the number will be increased considerably at an early date, although it is not intended to extend sustenance beyond relief workers employed by the City Council meantime. An important feature of the scheme is that eligibility for sustenance in relation to outside earnings will be determined in the same manner as at present used to determine eligibility for relief under Scheme No. 5.
