AIINISTER’S STATEAIENT. Per Press Association. JNATERCARGILL, April 16". Tlie Minister of Public AVorks and Employment met the representatives of tlie Southland League and Alotor Association in conference this evening. Air AV. R. Haigh, speaking on behalf of the Alotor Association, brought up the question of the diversion of the highways funds for other purposes. He said that at the present moment .when motorists were paying the . highest petrol tax in the world (101 d) it was a scandal that as small as sum as 2|d was being spent on roads. Hon. J. Bitchener said he thought the roads were in need of larger amounts being spent on them for their proper maintenance. ITon. A. Hamilton said lie agreed that as soon as the Government could restore the moneys to the Highways Board it should do so, but there was sure to be a deficit this year and they must help to reduce it in the meantime.
