HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received tho following cablegram, dated April 14, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: —• Tallow.—Market continues quiet. Small business has been done in mutton and and beef, sweet and/or mixed; otherwise in absence of business prices are nominal. Hemp.'—Manila market quiet and unchanged. Sisal market quiet and easier at tie close. April-Jurio and May-July shipments, sellers £l6 17s 6d. New Zealand market unchanged. No first-hand sales reported. Applos.—Mahana shipment slightly forward, but generally sound. Mamari, Tuscan Star, Opawa, Rangitiki, and Port Victor discharging next week. Current prices for Cox’s Orango, 11s to 18s, according to condition and size; Alfriston, 11s to 13s; Dunn’s Favourite, 10s to 12s; Jonathan,s lack colour, 8s to 12s; Worcester Pear-mains, forward, 8s to 11s; Gravoustcin, 7s to Bs. FROZEN MEAT TRADE. LAMB AND MUTTON KILLINGS LOWER. SIX MONTHS’ EXPORTS. Tho chief feature of the frozen meat returns for the six months ended March 31 is tho largo decrease in the killings of lamb and mutton for export. According to the Meat Board’s figures, tho killings of lambs totalled 5,949,566 compared with 6,337,478 for the corresponding period of last season, a decreaso of 387,912. In tho North Island the killings of lamb at 3,766,795 showed an increase of 203,945, but tho South Island killings at 2,182,771 showed a heavy decreaso of 591,857, thus making a net decrease for tho Dominion of 387,912.

The killings of sheep for the six months .totalled 1,182,888 carcases, compared with 1,497,990, a decrease of 315,102, which was fairly evenly divided between tho two islands. Tho North Island killings of nmlton at 1,035,051 showed a decreaso of 158,976 carcases. In tho South Island, however, tho killings of sheep for tho six months at 147,837 were less than one-half of thoso for the corresponding period of last season, the decrease being 156,126 carcases. Killings of pigs at 299,929 carcases compared with 198,998 showed a large increase of 100,931 carcases. Tho North Island killings accounted for most of tho increase, being 285,930, as against 196,551, an increase of 89,379 carcases. The South

Island killings of pork were 13,999, compared with 2447, an increase of 11,552 carcases. Tho following iables givo tho details of the killings of fat stock for export for the six months period of this season and of 1932-33: North Islana

The returns o,f shipments for the six months ended March 31 show increases in lamb, beef and pork and a decrease in mutton. During tho period 8477 quarters of chilled beef were shipped to London. The following table gives details of the shipments, the totals for the corresponding period of last season being shown for comparative purposes:— Frozen

‘Decrease. In addilion to the above, 8477 quarters of chilled befo were shipped to London during the six months; also 87,090 bags of boneless beef, compared with 86,251 bags during the corresponding period of last season. The Meat Board is advised by its London office that the shipments from Australia and South America to the United Kingdom during March were as follow Australia: 142,938 carcases mutton; 318,224 carcases lamb; 53,254 quarters beef. South America: 75,246 carcases mutton; 449,753 carcases lamb; 2896 quarters beef (frozen) ; 464,612 quarters beef (chilled). Included in the South American figures are 305,591 carcases of lamb and 46,518 carcases of mutton shipped from Patagonia. The shipments from New Zealand to tho United Kingdom for the same period were as follow: 221,852 carcases mutton; 1,063,961 carcases latnb; 33,155 quarters beef. There were no shipments of frozen moat from South America to the Continent of Europe during March. Stocks of meat in cold stores in New Zealand as at March 31 compare as follow :—-
