PRISONERS SENTENCED.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 17. The following prisoners were sentenced by Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to-day : —Howard Godfrey Pudney, on two charges of breaking and entering and theft, three years’ Borstal treatment; Lawrence Henry Diamond, breaking and entering and theft, two years' reformative detention; William Edwards, on six charges of breaking and entering and theft, and one of theft, 18 months’ reformative detention on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent; Hector Howard Capil, on two serious charges, twelve months’ hard labour; Ringa Whati Panirau, for a serious offence, twelve months’ hard labour. His Honour said that young gilds amongst Maoris must be protected. Probation for a Maori was of little use. William Henry Gardener, for theft and four charges of breaking and entering and theft, received three years’ probation and was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.
