DISTRICT NURSING.
EXPANSION OF SERVICE. FOXTON AND OTAKI. “The district nursing service in this area should in my opinion be expanded in the interests of the whole district,” stated the managing-secretary (Air A. J. Phillipps), in his report to the Palmerston North Hospital Board when estimates were being framed, yesterday afternoon. “Since the district nurse has been established at Shannon, on an average two persons who would -otherwise be Hospital inmates have been treated in their own homes,” he added. This means a substantial saving to the board. Apart altogether from this, the nurse has been able to do a great deal for the welfare of the community. I would like to see the Otaki nursing service, as recently proposed, established this year and, if possible, a district nurse appointed at Foxton. “Whether subsidies from local residents are to be required for the establishment of these nurses is a point well worth further investigation _by the board. Though the local committees do excellent work there are other aspects of the matter which are well worth further consideration. The amount providde this year includes £SO which the board agreed to pay towards the cost of the present nursing service at Otaki. If, of course, a change is made at Otaki in the near future in the arrangements, the estimate of £750 for this item will be incorrect. The provision has been made to meet circumstances as they exist at the present time.”
