ITALY LOWERS SALARIES.
WOOL IMPORT CONTROL. DECREES BY MUSSOLINI. ROME, April 14. Salaries of Italian State employees over £8 a month have been reduced by from 6 to 12 per cent. Rents have been simultaneously reduced by 12 per cent. Civil and military pensions are exempt. Retail prices of food are being reduced by 10 per cent. The decree will come into operation on April 16. Signor Mussolini decreed the reductions with characteristic suddenness. They include a 20 per cent, cut in the salaries of Ministers, and the tax on bachelors is 'increased by 50 per cent. It is rumoured that the decree will be followed by a general reduction in wages throughout the country in order equally to distribute the fall. It is officially announced that wool, copper and coffee will in future be imported only by licenses granted in relation to the balance of trade with the countries concerned. AUSTRALIA AFFECTED. TRADE In" WOOL. Received April 16, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, April 16. Signor Mussolini’s decree affects Australia only in regard to wool. The balance of trade is decidedly in Australia’s favour, mainly owing to Italy’s heavy purchases of wool.
