THE APIA HURRICANE.

LINK BY RELIC? Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 16. The Government steamer Maui Pomare, which arrived at Lyttelton this morning from the Islands, has on board a heavy bronze post, believed to be the steering post of the Olga, one of the German battleships which was lost in Apia Harbour during the great hurricane of March, 1889. The post was found by Captain McClymont, the harbourmaster at Apia, while dredging for a mooring. It will be forwarded to Wellington. By a great storm on March 15 and 16 1889, three German _ and three American warships were driven ashore at Apia on the island of Upolu and destroyed. About 50 Americans and 96 Germans were drowned. H.M.S. Calliope was the only warship saved, chiefly because of Captain Kane’s skill and the steaming qualities of Westport coal.
