LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated April 7, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—Poor demand continues. Values about unchanged. Hemp.—Manila market quiet. Value “K” grade for April-June shipment £l3 15s. Sisal market quiet and easier. AprilJune shipment quoted sellers £ll7 5s and May-July shipment sold at £l7 ss. Now Zealand market dull and unchanged, with no first-hand sales reported. Peas.—Maples demand disappointing. Market has declined, but a little more interest shown by buyers at the lower level. Sellers quote Tasmanian for April-Juno shipment at 40s 6d. Closing values New Zealand for April-May shipment, 395. Blues: Large supply of Tasmanian. Poor demand. Closing values for April-June shipment, £lO 15s to £lls.

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated April 7, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Apples.—Mataroa and Zealnndic shipmonts cleared. Port lriuntcr landed in good condition. Mahana, Tuscan Star and Mamari discharging noxt week. Trade very slow in anticipation of heavy arrivals. Current prices arc: Cox’s Orange, 14s to 20s; Jonathan, 11s to 13s; Dunn’s Eavounte, 10s to 12s; Worcester Pearmain, 9s to 11s; Alfriston’ 11s to 12s; Gravenstoin, 7s to 9s. RECORD FRUIT SHIPMENT. A record cargo of 115,000 cases of apples was shipped in the steamer Nebraska, which left Nelson on Thursday. Of the shipment 30,000 cases are i° ! ’ London, 70,000 for Manchester, and 15,000 for Glasgow. The previous largest direct shipment was 72,075 cases by the Port llobait in 1926. The total export of apples from Nelson up to March 22 was 420,094 cases. FARMING NEWS. RURAL RAKINGS. Cheese gradings .’for the week ended March 31, according to the Dairy Board, were as follow: 19,617 crates white, 10,977 crates coloured; total, 30,594. Always use salt when making hay, advises a practical farmer. It is an antiseptic, and, if sprinkled over the hay when stacking, prevents bacteria working too rapidly and the riso of a high temporature. Salt should be sprinkled over each load at tho rate of about 151 b per ton. It adds greatly to tho feeding value of crisp, dry hay and makes all hay more appetising. Erom January to March of the 1933 season two-tooth ewes in tho Hawke’s Bay markets were making from 12s 8d to 18s lOd, with the bulk of the lines offered making about 15s. This year two-tooth ewes have mado up to 33s 9d, and most good lines of young sheep have sold at 25s or more. * Five-year ewes last year were making from 8s 6d to 14s. This season similar sheep have been selling in many instances above 20s, and few good lines havo gono below 18s. Lambs which now realise up to 19s 3d in the storo pons were selling at 4s 6d to 11s lOd during 1933. Wethers now make 20s where formerly they were well sold at 8s 6d to 12s lCd. FOREIGN EXCHANGES. WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

A firm tone marked the reopening of the market on the Wellington Stock Exchange alter the Easter recess. There was a fairly good demand in most of tho popular sections. Trading was not very active, eight sales being recorded during tho day. Government loans were again in active demand, but sellers were fow. Pries were steady to firm on pre-Easter rates. The 4 per cent sttocks, 1949, had two sales on ’change at £lO3 ss. Banks woro rather quiet, with little or no change in quoted prices. Australasias had a sale at £l3 2s 6d, and more were wanted at £l3. New Zealands were firm at 48s Id, sellers 495, Union of Australias were wanted at £lO, sellers asking 6s more. Commercial of Australia were steady at 16s Pd, sellers 17s Id. Commercial of Sydney were a shade firmer at £l7 12s 6d, and New South Wales were steady at £33 15s. Financial and pastoral, gas and insurance shares were steady to firm at late rates. South British Insurance wero quoted at 76s 6d, cum. dividend, sellers asking 765. There was little doing in the meat, shipping, woollen, coal and timber sections. Breweries wero mostly steady. Timaru 7s 6d paid sold on ’change at ss. New Zealands were wanted at 39s 10d, sellers asking 40s 3d. Staples were unchanged at 26s 9d. Miscellaneous industrials and others were in steady demand. Thero were two sales of Woolworths (N.Z.) ordinaries at £5 12s 6d, and Dunlop Pordriaus sold at 19s Bd. Wilson Cement were quoted a shade firmer at 265. Sharland ordinaries were strong at 245. Colonial Sugars were unchanged at £64 ss, but sellers advanced to £65 ss. Mining shares were inclined to dullness. Waihis were sought at 34s 9d, sellers asking 35s 3d. Ring Solomons were easier at 3s 6d. Skippers is paid sort at Is 3d.
