EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 7, 1904. Tho Manawatu Athletic Park Company had had a fairly successful year and a dividend of five per cent was to be de-' dared. Many sheep had been lost in the north through their eating ragwort. Tho land from Katikati to Te Aroha was reported to be practically covered with ragwort and there seemed to be no means of eradicating it. Tho Tiiames Valley Land Company had lost 2000 sheep. Some 40 acres were devoted to grapevines at the Grecnmeadows vineyard (Hawke’s Bay). A complete wine-making plant was in operation. The outstanding rates for the borough of Palmerston North had amounted to only £2O 11s 2d at March 31. The total rates levied were £9379 as against £8472 the previous year. In the previous year at March 31 tho amount outstanding had been £3O. ' After making provision for depreciation and writing off the whole of the preliminary expenses, tho Feilding Gas Company was to have £784 11s 5d available for distribution. The dividend was to be 6 per cent. Lord Ranfurly, the Governor, was engaged upon a final tour in the South Island before the expiration of his term in New Zealand. At Christchurch he had unveiled a Jubilee Memorial tablet and subsequently received valedictory addresses from tho city of Christchurch and from the Maoris of Kaiapoi. A record price for a line of station-bred sheep for Australia had been established in New South Wales with the sale of 6000 6-th ewes at 29s each.
