PERSONAL.
Mr F. J. Nathan, his friends will regret to learn, has not yet regained his usual health, and is not as well, as he was when he recently showed an improvement. He is confined to his bed again. A notice in the Gazette appoints for a further term of twelve months five members of the Local Government Loans Board. The members concerned are: Mr R. A. Anderson, C.M.G., of Invercargill, who is a director of the Bank of New Zealand; Mr G. C. Godfrey, Commissioner of Employment, Wellington; Mr W. J. Holdsworth, chairman of the Auckland Electric Power Board; Mr G. A. Lewin, town clerk at Dunedin; and Mr S. A. R. Mair, engineer to the Rangitikei County Council. After over 40 years’ service in the Department of Agriculture, Mr R. Wright, principal supervising inspector of stock for the Wellington district, retired on superannuation on March 31. Mr Wright is a well-known figure among the farming community and stock and station interests, as his official duties brought him in close contact with settlers and the organisations. His district included the whole of the southern portion of the North Island,, taking in the provincial districts of Wellington, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, and Poverty Bay, and also across the Strait, Nelson and Marlborough. Another link with the early days of colonisation has been served by the death at Papawai of Mr Frederick Morgan, at the age of 98 years. Born on August 4, 1835, in Middlesex. England, Mr Morgan came to New Zealand in 1866, arriving at 'Wellington after a voyage of 91 days in the ship Electra. He brought out with him, for the Wellington Provincial Council, through Mr Charles Rooking Carter, the first shipment of English birds to come to New Zealand —pheasants, starlings, thrushes, blackbirds, sparrows, and numerous finches. He went to the Wairarapa five days after his arrival in this Dominion, and had resided there continuously ever since.
