DESPERATE THIEVES.
GOLD BUYERS ROBBED. CHASE THROUGH CITY STREETS. Thieves drove desperately through Sydney streets one night last week to escape after breaking a window and robbing a firm of gold buyers. Mr George Wray was turning his motor car at the corner of Park and Elizabeth Streets, when he heard the crash of falling glass. He looked round and saw a man with a brick in his hand striking the plate-glass window of the International Gold Buyers, Australasia, in the T. and G. Building. A taxi-driver and a few passers by appeared to be dumfounded, and made no attempt to stop the man. When there was a large hole in the ! window the man thrust a hand through it and released a blind, which had hidden the contents of showcases. Then he drew out a tray, which contained gold articles. He ran to a motor car bearing a Victorian number-plate, which had been drawn up against the kerb. Another man, who had kept the engine running, started the car at once The car turned and sped down Park Street, with Mr Wray in pursuit Constable Hey • was on duty at the corner of Park and College Streets. Ihe car cut across the corner into College Street. Its lights, except for’ a small parking lamp, were out, and it was impossible to distinguish the number. Constable Hey shouted to the driver to stop, but the man took no notice and drove rapidly away. Mr Wray stopped and told Constable Hey that the car contained thieves. The two set out in pursuit, but the thieves’ car disappeared into the lanes nf Darlinghurst.
