UPKEEP OF SCHOOL.

STATISTICS AT CENTRAL. Members of the Central School Committee at their .meeting, last evening, liacl some very interesting figures placed before them when the treasurer (Mr R. Tait) submitted the annual statement of receipts and expenditure as at the end of the committee’s financial year, February 20. The Central School is concerned with the education of 745 children at the present time, although there have in years gone by been a larger number on the roll. The total amount of finance that passed through the committee’s hands in the period concerned comprised £767 15s Id and the final result was a credit balance of £23 19s Id, showing that the expenditure had aggregated £743 16s. The chairman (Mr W. G. Black) commented that this was a very satisfactory position to disclose after an anxious period earlier in the year. An interesting table of comparisons was also drafted by Mr Tait to cover the years 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934. This showed that a steady decline in capitation had been recorded, the figures being as follow: £205, £249, £247, and £237. A remarkable increase in baths receipts was disclosed during the past four years. The takings were as follow: £62, £6B, £94, and £92 (with the present season not yet finished). The increased extent to which entertainments had contributed to the welfare .of the school left no doubt after the presentation of the following figures for the past four years: £94, £9l, £152, and £293. The Central School has secured a very fine reputation for its splendidly laid out grounds and the table of expenditure shows that this has been won only after the exercise of considerable care in planning. In 1931 nothing was shown as having been expended in this direction, but in the following year the cost was £l2B. In 1933 the expenditure was £179, but this year all previous figures have been outstripped with £322.
