MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

TWO REMANDS * RAN TED. William Wallace Clifford, alias Frank Cooper, aged 25, appeared before Messrs J. A. Cruicksliank and W. G. Ashworth, J.P.’s, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge that on March 9, 1934, he did steal from the dwelling of Mr M. Millar, in Amesbury Street, seven rings, a watch and sundry jewellery of a total value of £95. Harold George Newbury appeared on a charge that on March 8, at Palmerston North, he did steal five planes, one chisel and a circular saw of a total value of £8 ss, the property of Mr A. D. Waters. On the application of Senior-Detec-tive Quirke a remand was granted in each case until Friday next. DEFENDED CIVIL ACTION. Proceedings were taken by Charles Massey, of Taikorea (Mr J. M. Gordon) in a civil action against Arthur Castles, of Taikorea (Mr T. M. N. Rodgers) to recover £1 7s 7d. Evidence was given by plaintiff that £1 of the money was an advance made which had not been repaid. The 7s 7d represented the amount of an insurance premium paid by plaintiff on behalf of defendant, who, lie said, lrad been requested to pay on three or four occasions. Cross-examined, plaintiff said he had no receipt for the money advanced. Defendant, in evidence, admitted that plaintiff had lent him money occasionally but said that he had always repaid it. The Bench decided tliak they were not satisfied plaintiff had proved his case ,and accordingly non-suited him. Defendant was allowed 10s expenses.
