SANDON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, Marcli 12. A good audience greeted the Diggers at the Public Ilall, Sanson, on Friday night. Had the weather been favourable, the attendance would have been a full “house.” The programme was a varied one and all of the items were well received. The opening chorus went with a swing. A. Signal entertained with a recitation; Mr J. Currie sang “I’m on the Staff” in his usual happy stylo; a farce, “That Brute Simmons,” was well staged; a vocal solo,

“The Bandolero,” by Mr 11. V. Bond, was greatly enjoyed. The first part ended with a sketch, “The Buffalo Women’s Institute.” The second half opened with a chorus, followed by a musical farce, “The (Dis) Orderly Room”; a vocal solo, Mr Churchill; soldiers’ sketch, “Last Night in the Billets”; and the final chorus. During the interval Mr E. J. Bowater announced the winner of a competition in aid of the Palmerston North Garrison Band. The lucky winner was Mr W. AlcConachy. Air A. K. Drew returned thanks to all who had assisted in making the performance the success it had been. Rev. A. G. Lane replied and thanked those present for their help towards the funds. The stage decorations were done under the the direction of Mr H. Y. Bond, Mr C. Edwards was a capable accompanist. A meeting of tho Kotahitanga group of the Women’s Institute, which comprises Bulls, Sanson, Marton Junction, Rongotea, Glen Oroua, Tailcorea, Oroua Downs, Rangiotu, Awahuri, Kopane, Carnarvon, and Halcombe institutes, was held at tht: Public Ilall, Sanson, on Friday afternoon. Mrs J. Will (Rongotea) presided. Tho principal business was to arrange a drama competition within the group. It was decided to hold the competition at Sanson in June. Details for the competition were held over pending advice from Mrs Briscoe, Palmerston North. It was resolved that the next group meeting be held at Oroua Downs. Afternoon tea for the visitors was provided by members of the Sandon branch.

A team from the Sandon Tennis Club met Carnarvon B on the grounds of the latter club on Saturday, the home side scoring a, win.

The Sandon Club are improving their ground and desire the help of all to assist in their efforts. It is proposed to put down a second hard court and with this in view a dance is to be held early in April. Particulars are advertised in this issue. Tho results of a handicap singles tourney at present being played are as follows :—First round: Ladies’, wins were secured by RI. Oppatt, L. Gedye, B. Lumsden, G. Sanson, B. King, R. Dwyer, Airs May and Airs Bowater. Second round : B. Lmnsden 61 v. Airs Alay 51; Airs E. L. Bowater 61 v. L. Gedye 52; At. Oppa-tt 61 v. B. King —; G. Sanson 61 v. Mrs L. Sta-ite 49. Men : Winners in the first round were F. Meyer, D. Hammond. AI. Lumsden, W. Aiken, AI. Sanson, Ken Lumsden, F. Alurphy, B. Reeve, P. Gedye and AI. Cockburn. Second round: AI. Lumsden 61 v. M. Cockburn 50; W. Aiken 61 v. AI. Sanson 54; D. Hammond 61 v. F. Alurphy 46; F. Aleyer 61 v. R. Lumsden 56; D. Sanson 61 v. R. Oppatt 47; Ken Lumsden 61 v. A. AlcCormick 57; R. Nicol won by default from C. Sanson;' P. Gedye won by default from B. Reeve.
