HEAVY PENALTIES.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 13. Heavy penalties were inflicted on Chinese who appeared in Court tins morning as the result of the raid on an opium den in Hauling Street yesterday afternoon. The occupier of the premises, Ng Kum Tong, was charged with permitting his premises to be used for the purpose of opium .smoking, being found in the possession of prepared opium, and wilfully obstructing the police. He pleaded guilty to the first and second charges and not guilty to the third. Seven other Chinese were charged with being unlawfully on premises used for opium smoking, all pleading guilty. The sub-inspector said the police had to force an entry, the building being heavily barricaded. The usual paraphernalia was seized. On the first charge Tong was fined £IOO with 10s costs, and a guinea interpreter’s fee, in default three months’ gaol. On the second charge he was convicted and discharged, lor obstructing the police he was lined LiO. Three of the accused with previous convictions .were fined £2O each and the remainder £ls.
