THE DANNEVIRKE MEETING.

COMMENT ON THE FORM.

(By "Binocular.”) Walton Park, winner of the highweight event on the opening day, should add iurther to his account in the near future, for he is now staying on very solidly. Miss Hushabye and Te Ua appear to have temporarily lost all form. The latter, more particularly, has been required to stand up to a good deal of racing, ao this is not altogether surprising. Hark Forrard, who is a full-sister to View Halloa, has taken a long time to come light, but her second, followed by a win on Saturday, points to this stage having been reached. Incidentally, R. K. Hatch has a full-sister at Awapuni and ehe throws back to the grandsiro. Hurry On, in colour. Te Rangitumau has still to win his first race. On occasions ho has displayed considerable promise, and patroti3 on the second day selected him. as tho favourito on his return to tho novice company, only to loso on the investment. Bred as ho is, his turn should come. While his looks hardly commend him, Copper King is proving to be a very consistent porformor. Aftor winning tho Woodvillo Handicap, he was somewhat unlucky to bo beaten at Bulls, but he mado amends by adding the Dannevirke Cup on Friday. Being/ homo-trained, his success was popular. It was anticipated that tho big roomy courso would bo to tho liking of Catalogue, but after his two reverses at tho Woodvillo Club's moeting last month, Copper King was preferred to him in the Dannevirke Cup. The i x>i-d Qucx gelding certainly registed an improved performance, but, lie had to be content with second money. Tho outing should prove beneficial. The two-year-old events saw the uncertainty in form continue, for tho winner on tho opening day, . Queen’s Pride, was little fancied, although the form of the Leighton filly at tho Woodville fixture merited stronger support. On tho second day Palm squoozed homo from Peggy’s Joy, who showed a substantial improvement.

Balbus was unfortunate both days at tho barricr-riso and, although he showed a lot of pace ill the concluding stages, a fourth and a third wore all that came his way. Ho is a brown gelding by Lapidary from Azecta, by Tautoko, from tho Birkenhead mare Hermia, and thus belongs to a very successful family. Although he had. been absent from racing for some considerable time, Takakua looked in great order when paraded lor the President's Handicap on tho opening day. However, few anticipated that he would provo capable of winning, but his apprentice rider drove him home. The performance points to tho Royal Divorce gelding playing a part at some of tlie bigger fixtures in tho near future. Epigram registered a groat performance at the Auckland Christmas meeting when lie won tho Queen’s Plato and Plunket Handicap, both being mile events. Reverting to sprint company at Woodville lie attended Takakua homo in the President’s Handicap, coming from well back ovor tho last three furlongs. In a throe horse race on Saturday, he was able to move up on tho turn and thereafter he had the event in his keeping. The Pombal gelding reads quite well weightod in the Thompson Handicap at Trcntham. Early in his career Pladie gave distinct promise, but an accident led to his retirement from racing for a time, and thereafter his form was somewhat disappointing, although ho won a small race at tho Rangitikoi Hunt meeting. However, tho manner in which ho beat a field of useful class on the opening day at Woodvillo indicates that he has struck form.. Ho has had somo changes of stables and is now quartered at Otaki. One of the most consistent horses on this circuit has . been Speed, and tho Diacquonod gelding carried his 9.5 to victory in the Oringi Handicap on the opening day in good style. Transferring to tho big handicap on Saturday ho found his 9.0. over the longer distance just a little too much for him. While no may never provo to be a true stayer. Speed is above tho average over distances up to a mile.

At the February meeting of the Woodville Club La Modernc had two outings over sprint distances to fade out at the business end of things, after being prominent in the early stages. The daughter of Lord Qucx and Lady Ball canio in on the second day to contest tho Hartgill Memorial, but lack of racing condition told against her. However, she looked bright and well and bettor things should be forthcoming from tho N.Z. St. Lcger winner.

Haz.oor, the four-yoar-old son of the New Zealand Derby winner, Black Ronald (a son of Magpie), from Moana, a mare that, never raced, finished very fast in tho Makirikiri Hack Handicap on the opening day. On transferring to highweight company oil Saturday bo made light of his 10.13. He figures in tho same class of events at Trcntham, and he will no doubt have friends on the day.

West Tor, who attended Pladio homo in the hack sprint on tho first day, appreciated the easy going and his form showed a substantial improvement. At his first three appearances last season West Tor registered successive wins. His sire, East Tor, is by Sir Eager, a son of Eager (siro of tho dams of Paper Money and Gloaming), while his dam is White Tor, by Torpoint, a son of Trenton (by Musket). West Tor was purchased by his owner at the Sydney sales for 55 guineas. Royal Shift, who finished strongly aftor being' well book in tho early stages of his races, is by Moreian King and is a halfbrother to Kahn Ariki and Head Sevang, being out of Chemise, by Multifid-Lady Augusta. He was bred, by Mr A. Smail who originally raced him, but ho now carries the colours of Bramblctorn’s owner, Mr J. Allison.

Although Awapuni horses figured in tho money on 14 occasions at tho fixture. Calydon and Palm were the only members to securo a win. The former is an upstanding gelding by Hunting Song from Blue Mint, a daughter of Blue Lake, and is thus closely related to tho Paper Money filly Blue Paper, who was a very usofiil performer a couple of seasons ago. Bred by Mr C. F.. Vallancc, Calydcn is now racing in the interests of Mr W. G. Shannon, and ho should do good service for his owner.
