KOPANE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) KOPANE, March 12. The earthquake of last week was the heaviest yet experienced in this district. The motion was a swaying one without any severe jolts or the consequences might have been considerably worse than they were. A large number of chimneys have been brought down, while many more have to be taken down as a result of cracks. In many houses crockery, pickles, jams, etc., were thrown from cupboards and smashed on the floor, while in several instances tanks burst. Numerous cracks and blowholes have appeared adjacent to the Oroua River banks, several of the cracks being four inches wide and several chains long. Beyond this no other material damage was dono. A team of runners representing the Kopane School journeyed to tho Feilding and District Schools Amateur Athletic Association’s annual sports held on Saturday. This team was successful in retaining the Country Cup for schools with a roll number under 100 pupils. The successful runners
wore: Jean Glasgow, one first; Aileen Nix, one first and ono third; Joyce Prentice, third; Joan Hill, one first and one third; Douglas Hill, one first; Brian Jones, one third; and Rex Dawbin, one third. This is the sixth occasion in seven years that the Kopano School has won the cup. Mr and Mrs A. W. Thomson are visiting Wellington, where Mr Thomson is participating in the shooting championships. Mr • B. K. Thomson leaves soon with a party * for a fishing trip to Taupo. Miss Nancy I* Robertson, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs E. J. Morgan, has left again for I the south.
