(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Jan. 24. Constable Boyd leaves in the course of a few days to relievo Constable Owen at Foxton. Mr H. Udy has had the misfortune to meet with a painful mishap, having one of his fingers caught in a cycle, and necessitating one joint being amputated. Mrs Saveli, who has been on a visit to the . Sounds (Picton) returned to Otaki on Friday. At the sports meeting at Otaki on Mon day, the sum of over £3O was taken at the gate. Mr Moore, of Rangiuru, who recently had the misfortune to be struck in the eye with a piece of box-thorn, has been under treatment by a specialist in Palmerston North, but, unfortunately, the sight of the eye could not be saved. A fire was started on the native land near the golf, links on Friday night, and in a brief space tho flames spread over a large area, destroying grass, lupins, etcl, and endangering farms. Luckily, the wind was in a favourable direction, otherwise campers might have suffered heavily. Mombers of the Municipal Croquet Club visited tho Otaki Club on Wednesday and indulged in enjoyablo games for prizes donated by Mrs Bradnock. Four matches are to be played for tho trophies. Two have already been played, and honours between the two clubs are oven. Playing for tho Byron Brown trophies on the municipal croquet green, Mrs Warnock beat Mrs Cobb, while Mrs Kilmister and Mrs Evans also defeated the same player. Mrs Cobb, however, boat Mrs Wilson. For the Brandon Rose Bowl,. Mrs Gillispie beat Mrs Kilmister, while for the Richards Cup, Mrs Morgan beat Mrs Shaw. The platter, however, beat Mrs Hagan.
