A RARE STAMP.

LOCAL RESIDENT’S CURIOSITY. In the “Standard” on Thursday night there appeared a paragraph of interest to philatelists in connection with the United States special commemorative issue of an N.R.A. stamp of three cents in which an error occurs, there being only one leg on the figure, that of a professional man. The fact that the issue was called in at the 350,000 mark makes this issue particularly rare and there will be very few persons outside America with such a specimen. Mr H. Newth, of Palmerston North, is the possessor of one, however, the letter bearing it arriving the same dav on which the “Standard” published the news item. Only a little defaced by the cancellation mark, the stamp quite clearly demonstrates the fault for which the United States officials were caused so much trouble. It is understood that the vast population of the United States makes such a demand on the authorities that the daily issue of stamps is in the vicinity of three or four nidlion, and it is safe to estimate that the particular three cent one represents only half an hour’s issue, so that from a collector’s point of view it might well be classed among the rarefies, with the probability of a high price within a comparatively short time. One issue in America which was made a few years ago with an inverted design is reported to bo now worth about £6OO per specimen.
