PAHIATUA
PAHIATUA, Dec. 1. A meeting of the committee of the Bush Group of Women’s Institutes was held last Saturday afternoon, when there was a fairly representative attendance, members being present from surrounding institutes. Mrs C. Walker presided. Mrs Walker thanked members of the group on behalf of the Mangatainoka Institute (of which she is president) for assistance given in catering on the occasion of the half-yearly council meeting of the Northern Wellington Federation held recently, in Pahiatua and at which the Mangatainoka Institute members acted as hostesses. The business of the meeting was principally to arrange for a tour of the Bush district for Messrs Sanderson and Wilson, of the New Zealand Native Bird and Forest Protection Society. Preliminary arrangements were made also for a folk dancing competition in connection with the autumn meeting of the group and for which some of the institutes have already begun practising. No bankruptcies wore • recorded locally last month by the District Official Assignee (Mr J. D. Wilson). The total so far this year is only two.
Two building permits to the value of £2lB were issued last month by the Borough Council. Mr G. E. Wingfield, son of Mr P. E. Wingfield, who is a student at Otago University, Dunedin, is making excellent headway in his studies, having passed a further examination in dentistry. Mr J. O’Sullivan, of the Paliiatua Post Office staff, has resumed duty after three weeks’ vacation in Westland. Mr P. O’Brien,' senr., is an inmate of a private hospital. Mr G. Bottomley. of Waihou, Thames Valley, is re-visiting Pahiatua. Mr W, McBratney, who has been an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital, has left the institution. A member of the staff of the Pahiatua Post Office (Mr H. R. Ogg) has been successful in passing the final of the departmental controlling officers’ examination. Mr and Mrs S. Freeman, of Masterton. are the guests of Mr and Mrs J. D. Wilson. The funeral of the late Mr P. Reid took place on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. The service at the residence, Cambridge Street, and at the graveside at Mangatainoka was conducted by Rev. K. L. Warren. The pallbearers were Messrs Clarence Reid, Gordon Reid, Campbell Lucas, Walter Linton (Featherstou), James Linton (Carterton) and Morton Lawson. Mnny beautiful floral tributes were laid on the grave. The Mortgagors’ Commission dealt with about 25 cases during its sittings in Pahiatua this week.
