“SCANDALOUS TREATMENT.” The London Daily Herald’s special correspondent says:—“The precautions taken to prevent the torturing of prisoners by. the Nazis becoming known have failed to hush up the scandalous treatment of Dr. Litten, a well-known Berlin lawyer, who is lying between life and death in the Brandenberg concentration camp. He is being tortured in order to extort professional secrets regarding Socialist clients Whom he lie- ’ fended. One day he broke down under the torture and made avowals regarding Socialists, but the next day he asserted that they were not true. Twice he tried to commit suicide, but Nazi doctors said: “He must not be allowed to die, as we need his avowals. Later he can do as he likes.’ Dr. Litton is now in bed, crying for poison.” Mr Arthur Greenwood, who was Minister for Health in the Labour Government, in a speech at Manchester, denounced Fascist dictatorship. “I can count at least 25 friends of mine whom the Nazis have murdered this year because they were either Jews or Socialists,” he declared. “German bishops even want to substitute the swastika for the Cross.”
