“PUT IT THERE MATE.”
PRINCE JOINS “OLD BILL” CLUB
The Prince of Wales, visiting an exhibition of disabled ex-servicemen’s work, enrolled as the “first gentleman member” of the Old Bill fraternity of St. Dunstan’s, members of which promise to purchase at least 5s worth of goods made by blinded men. The Duchess of York became the “first lady member.”
The Prince paid his membership fee and 6d and signed on the dotted line in response to an invitation by the figure of “Old Bill” with outstretched hand captioned,' “Put it there, mate!” He bought numerous articles at the exhibition, chiefly brightly-coloured mufflers and handkerchiefs, saying: “Cheerful colours make cheerful people” ; also women’s handbags, which, he said, he wanted to compare with those made by foreigners.
