CALL ON PRESIDENT.

MR ALFRED SMITH. For the first time since the election of his rival to the Presidency, Mr Alfred' Smith called at White House on November 15. Mr Smith was the Democrat nominee in 1920, but Mr Roosevelt won it against him last year. Mr Smith was very affable with the reporters when he departed. “Our conversation embraced two subjects,” he said. “First we talked about the size of our respective families; secondly, our rivalry for grandchildren.” “What about politics?” he was asked. “Nobody said a word about politics, except one of the children. He asked for another piece of. cake.”
