111 MONTHLY MEETING. ifo The monthly meeting of the Foxton | Harbour Board was held to-day in | ! iPalmerston North, when Mr J. Link--1; later, M.F., presided. Members pre--1 sent were: Messrs W. E. W. .Goldsmith, i'll Thirteen letters were tabled from a ijS® beach resident and, on the suggestion' .5 ,5 of the chairman, it was decided to i« take the matter in dispute to arbitraiion, the resident and the board to each appoint an arbitrator, iff Following upon a discussion in comj / mittee the resolution was rescinded and it was decided to place the mat* ?liter in the hands of the board’s soliciiffetor so that action could be taken. :4 BEACH IMPROVEMENTS, The Beach Improvement Committee submitted the following report on recent activities: —“The committee has recently erected a large shelter shed with four 600-gallou tanks with spring taps and suitable tables for the convenience of tenants and visitors, at a cost of over £7O. The committee has also completed and supervised the planting of 40,000 pinus iiisignis trees which are growing satisfactorily and will in the course of a few years become a great asset to the board and the locality. It is the committee s intention to plant as many next year. The committee has also carried out road formation and repairs generally. We intend to hold a monster gala day : fl; for the purpose of augmenting the committee’s funds for permanent improvements at the beacn. In this we enlist the hearty co-operation of the . board and the public in general. The i £ committee tender the board their I; thanks for its donation and co-opera- | wtion and express the hope that the i v board will do all in its power to make ; i f' the proposed gala day the success it i . deserves to be.” ;! $ The chairman assured Mr Perreau ■ I (chairman of the Beach Improvement 1 1 if-Committee) that the members would be willing to assist the committee on the occasion of the gala day. The beach was gaining steadily in popularity and the planting of trees had done much to stem the sand menace. As soon as that portion of the road between Rangiotu and Himatangi was sealed, it would bring the beach within three-quarters of an hour of Palmerston North. To his mind it was the coming beach along the West | f Coast, and the erection of a shelter 2 shed had proved to be a very fine adVditiou and would be appreciated by 4 visitors on occasions when the weather . -sbecame indifferent. the beach, but he directed' attention to the fact that the beach possessed a very fine hall and two tennis courts in splendid order. The pilot (Mr A. Nelson) reported that the bar was holding at least 9 feet at neap tides. It wms, however, gradually working to the south and the main beacons had been shifted two widths to the south. There had been a lot of westerly winds during the month and the Foxton had been wea-ther-bound from the 17th to 23rd and the Huanui from the 12th to the 16th and the 20th to the 23rd, there being too much wind and sea for them to cross. The beacons at Epiramas and Hobinson’s No. 1 had also been shifted. The Director .of Forestry wrote agreeing to fulfil an order for 35,000 pinus radiata trees. —The secretary mentioned that the trees had come to hand. The Harbour Boards’ Association H!wrote enclosing a copy of the HarHjbour Boards’ Amendment Bill, toiSgether with confidential corresponffidence in connection with same.—The 3schairman stated that Mr J; A. Nash, iM.P., and he would watch the board’s § interests in the matter, jp The secretary submitted a report in fl; connection with railway competition in opposition to small ports and coastal shipping, and mentioned that ■ the shipping at the port had shown an improvement during October. It had been intended to hold a confer-

ence of harbour boards, but it had not been proceeded with as it had been felt that the position of the boards would be prejudiced should they confer before meeting the Railways Board. ■ Mr Keilow mentioned that at the Chambers of Commerce Conference at \vanganui the matter had been discussed, but no action had been taken as the chambers had been pressing tor the railways to be run on business lines. Mr Raikes stated that the shipping authorities had expressed pteasure. at the distribution facilities furnished at the port. The was left on the table for the information of the members, and the matter is to be discussed at the next meeting. Air A. M. Hopcroft wrote requesting that the road fronting his house at the beach be extended. —Left in the hands of the secretary to attend to. Airs iil. J. Watkins wrote requesting a reduction ot rent from £5 6s to £2 on account of erosion.—A reduction to tj'J, Ills bd was agreed to. Mr Perreau, who was present, explained that one of his sections had been so affected that he had taken up another in its stead. He asked that he be relieved of the original section. The request was acceded to, while it was decided to bring down a report on f the matter of sections which have been affected by erosion. Mrs M. Hansel, Palmerston North, wrote asking for assistance in the repairing of the bank adjacent to her property and suggesting that the bank £ be lined with ti-tree or scrub and

pegged down. The matter was left |&'to the committee to investigate. §| A draft of the camp site license was . tabled by the secretary, i; Mr Barber considered that it was tlharsh to charge the campers who a camp for the day only and •Ij-who did not stay overnight. V, Mr Raikes suggested that the matter ,be referred to the local committee anil ■that it confer with the Beach Improvement Committee. This course |of action was agreed to. | Mr Raikes inquired. whether the ‘board, in arranging its leases, was 'taking any steps to prevent an undesirable class of tenants being introduced. Mr Perreau added that the Beach Improvement Committee was of the opinion that the board’s powers in respect to cancelling leases, where that was considered desirable, were not sufficiently arbitrary. It was finally decided that a report be prepared and tabled at the next meeting. FINANCIAL STATEMENT.
