LEVIN MEETING. M I LAD I WINS THE HANDICAP. SLIPPERY THE SPRINT. Splendid racing conditions prevailed for the annual meeting of the Levin Racing Cntb on Saturday and, with an excellent crowd in attendance, the club was in the happy position of enjoying an increase in ii- returns, the sum of £9521 10s being handled hy the totalisator, as compared with £7709 10s last year—an increase of £lßl2. The principal honours went to Miladi in a magnificent finish, the Blenheim-trained marc getting up to beat Count Palatine • and La Poupce, while the sprint event was productive of another magnificent finish, Slippery holding on just long enough to beat Aiguille and Equitant. PRESENTATION OF TROPHY. At the conclusion of the Levin Handicap, the handsome case of cutlery, which accompanied the winner’s stake money, was presented to Mr W. A. Fuller (who ! look delivery of the trophy on behalf of Mrs Fuller, in whoso nomination Miladi runs) by Mr J. Linklatcr, M.P. The Member for Manawatu called for three cheers for the successful owner, trainer and jockI cy, which were heartily given, while he ■ a’so took the opportunity to express plea- , sure at the improvement in health enjoyed by Mr AV. G. Vickers, the president of : the club. 1. An enquiry into the accident which befell j Sage and Hark Forrard was held after ( tin* Weraroa Hack Handicap, but the judicial committee found that the mishap had ■ been purely accidental, and that no blame : was attachable to anyone, Sage having been clear of any opponents when ho faltered and fell. J A HAPPY ASSOCIATION. |‘ Making his first appearance following his return from Australia, R. Reed piloted the I winner of the Maiden Race —a feat lie has I performed before under similar cireurnstan- | ces. Lone Raider, tbe only progeny of | the defunct Raider, was having his first j race since his three-year-old career . three I years ago. He jumped away smartly from | Laek-o-wai, Suttee, Wyndalo, Bay Area • an 1 Maypay, with Raparahara ahead of i the bunch. Host made a forward move I going down the back and was with Lone Raider as they came across the top. Wyndale and Bay Area were handy at the entrance, but in the fun homo Lone Raider

chew away to win . comfortably by four lengths from Wyndalo, with Maypay a couple of lengths back. Raparahara was a fair fourth with Gay Coat next. Now a six-year-old, the winner should be heard from again. AN AWAPUNI SUCCESS.

In a field of uncertain hurdle performers, Tudor, who had but the one earlier start in the role, was installed favourite on the win machine for the Manakau Hurdles, but Silent Bill was preferred on (lie place, nfUehinc. While Tudor registered a hollow win, Silent Bill was beaten into fourth place. Interest in the race was lost when Miss Huehabye had to be pulled up as a result of Tier rider losing an iron about five furlongs from home. She had charge from Tudor nt the lime and her withdrawal left the Awapuni representative well clear of Cotsfield and Silent Bill, ' with Air Laddie some distance back. The last named made up a lot of ground over the last half mile, and he got up to beat the tiring Cotsfield for second place by a neck, Tudor, who was casing up, having a four lengths advantage. There was a gap of two lengths to tluv big-framed Silent Bill with a longer interval to Willowrnere'. SECRECY WINS AGAIN.

’The field of 15 acceptors in the Weraroa Hack Handicap was reduced to 11 by the withdrawal of Saltpot (the bracketed companion of Bonnie Vale), Mercian Queen, White Squall and Wcrohia. Secrecy and Limbolun wore the prime fancies and the pair fought out the finish, Bonnie Yale’s effort in the straight coming too late. The horses drawn close to the rails secured the best of the start, Acceptable dashing to the front to open up a gap of several lengths from Bonnie Vale, Te Ua, Limbohm and Sago. Half a mile from Home Sage came down, while Hark Forrard lost his rider in the mix-up. It was later found that Sage had broken his off hind leg at the fetlock. The field closed up on Acceptable approaching the straight whore To Ua, Liiribolm, Secrecy, Bonnie Vale and Night Runner were handy. Limbohm ran to the front, but Secrecy, who had registered her first success at Carterton the previous Saturday, finished the stronger to win by a neck, with Bonnie Vale a half length back. Te Ua, who did not enjoy a free run in the straight, was fourth, with Colossical next. A SPLENDID FINISH.

Although only six of the nine acceptors in the Levin Handicap went to the post, the event was productive of a stirring finish, Miladi, the- favourite, putting in a remarkable run to win. La l’oupco was in charge from Korokio and Count Palatine as they passed the stands, the leader being under a firm hold. La Poupce’s rider allowed his mount to stride along turning into the back, hut the field again closed up half a mile from home where Korokio was just ahead of Count Palatine. La Poupee rati a shade wide turning into the straight, enabling Count Palatine to come through on the rails, and although the latter promised to be the winner at the distance, La Poupee continued to fight it out. However, Miladi, who had commenced her run three furlongs from home, ran round her field and, under the whip, producer her typical run to get up unci win by a nock from Count Palatine, with La Poupce a silililar distance hack. Fairway was close up fourth. I’HEON DISAPPOINTS.

Pheon and Ida Mcrling were sought after for the Mako Mako Hack Handicap in which only five of the eight horses went to the post. Pheon, who appeared to be slightly sore ran a disappointing race, arid it was Ida Mcrling who curried her backers through. Wasteland set the pace from Ida Mcrling,' Pheon and Land Tax, Pegged Exchange,' who had declined to ger into line, having been the last to move. Pegged Exchange was rushed up to tlie leader, but he immediately gave way again and Wasteland led Ida Mcrling into the straight. Land Tax came with a sustained run, but lie could . not overtake Ida Mcrling., who strode on to win by three-quarters of a length from Land Tax, with Wasteland a similar distance back. Pegged Exchange stopped very badly and was the last to finish. A SURPRISE. Saltpot, who was running out. his hack nominations, w'as a firm favourite from Chock Say for tlie Lack Hack Handicap, but Lovccourt, who had the services of K. Voitre, stole a march half a mile from home and she hung, on to win nicely from the favoured pair. Saltpot led from Icier and Lovccourt as they passed through the straight, Mercian Prince and Flower having been squeezed out at the start. Going along the back Loveeourt went to the front, while Icier dropped hack to the rear, and the leader turned for home well clear of Chock Say and Saltpot. In the run home the challengers made no impression on Lovccourt, who wont on to win by two and a half lengths from Chock Say, who was a ltalL length ahead of Saltpot. Icier came again to take . fourth place. A CLOSE CALL. Korokio and Miladi, who had figured earlier in the day, were not saddled up for the McDonald Memorial Handicap, for which Equitant was preferred to Aiguille and Slippery. In an exciting finish the trio finished in reversed order, but Aiguille was the unlucky runner, for lie had to come round his field in the straight. As is invariably the case owing to the position of the seven furlongs barritr, the inside horses secured the best of the jump-out,- Slippery piloting Equitant anti Navnho at the barrier rise, but going along tlie back Aston went up to the leader and the veteran and Slippery’ were two lengths clear of Equitant and .Navaho as they came acros-rs the top. Aiguille, - "' l ° ■ been in behind on the rai 6, failed to sccure an opening and lie had. to conic round his field. In a great finish, he just failed lo catch Slippery, there being a neck between them at the |>cst. Equitant was a head away with Grand Jury, who finished well, fourth. THE SCURRY DISTANCE. Of the 16 acceptors for the Hokio Hack Handicap, only eight went to the post, Etiquette being the taveiinte from Hunting Ledge anil Haulbowline. It was the last named who secured the major dividend, with Hunting Lodge a minor place taker, Wasteland finishing very last to beat the latter for second place. Interlocutor, who was having Ins. first start tor some time, showed a lot of his old pace by jumping to the front with Haulbowliiie, and the pair led Hunting Lodge, Kt.ictuetle, Acceptable. Azure and Bon Iva pule into the straight, the last named, however, running wide at the entrance, lusid- the distance Haulbowline was in charge and he held off a fast finishing e - fort by Wasteland to win by a head, with Hunting Lodge a neck back. Etiquette was fourth and Acceptable next. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
