CRICKET

SECOND ROUND OPENS. CENTURY TO ROBERTSON. . Senior cricketers entered upon the second round of their competitions on Saturday under very pleasant conditions. The draw found Palmerston, the leading eleven, opposing United, and the champions ran up the big total of 329 for the loss of only seven wickets, Robertson compiling 114, while A. M. Ongley displayed a return to his batting form of some seasons back by compiling 62. On the adjoining wicket, High School and Old Boys tried conclusions, the former occupying the wickets for the whole afternoon for their total of 185, the individual returns being much more modest. A staunch opening partnership contributed in no small measure to High School’s useful score of 185 when stumps were drawn after nine wickets had gpne the way of the Old Boys’ bowlers. Carlisle and Hearsey opened out from the start and were well on the way to comfortable scoring before the partnership was severed. The former had reached 31, with two fours in the total, before he succumbed to a catch by J. Gallichan off Dredge, and the latter went on to just miss the half century by two when the same pair of Old Boys had him dismissed in a similar manner. Included in his score were one six and three fours. From then on the scoring was more stolid than brilliant as the High School boys steadily increased their total. McVicar went back to the pavilion after reaching 14, but a better stand saw K. Hatch add 28. Thereafter for a short time there was a rapid fall of wickets as Stuckey went for two and Arnott for three. A steadying influence was lent by Loudon, however, and careful play enabled him to carry his bat for 30 before he was dismissed by a neat catch by Glover off a delivery from Dredge. There were five fours in his total. Towards the end scoring was anything but lively. The detailed soores are as follow: HIGH SCHOOL. Carlisle, c J. Gallichan, b Dredge 31 Hearsey, c J. Palmerston’s innings was characterised by several splendid batting performances. With seven wickets down ofr 329 the outlook was very bright when stumps were drawn. The openmg partnership between Norris and Robertson was early broken when the former went cheaply for eight, but when A. M. Ongley went in the batsmen settled down to steady run-get-ting before the latter was cauglrt for 24 °by Cockery off a ball by Jewett. Robertson was meanwhile steadily increasing his score _and R. Hatch came in to help the total to the tune of 21. Mullins went for 14 and Pegden did little with his bat when Olliver secured a smart catch off Evans. Monteith appeared likely to stem the rot which was setting in and made a useful 16. Robertson was playing a fine ball and frequently finding the outfield, eventually passing the century, but a remarkable catch by Jewett from a ball by Cockery, the first of the latter’s over, spelled an end to a prolific innings when he had 114 against his name, 14 fours being included. A. M. Ongley went in to partner Leet, to succeed Monteith, and when stumps were drawn he had made 62 and Leet 46. Detailed scores are: PALMERSTON.

JUNIOR A. LEADING TEAMS MEET. Two of the leading teams in the junior A competition, Combined Services A and City Council, met at the

Sportground, and the close of play for the day found the game in an interesting position. Services had first strike to compile 149, of which Hart (67) and McSkimming (59) were responsible for the majority of the runs. Bowling for City Council Morgan took four wickets for 29 runs, Burgess two for seven and Gavey and Lane each two at a cost of 28 runs. At the drawing of stumps City Council had 63 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets, Burgess having made 27 and Waugh 12. The continuation of the match promises to furnish an interesting struggle. KIA TOA’S GOOD EFFORT. Opposing Kia Toa, Old Boys made an indifferent showing, being all out for 103, Dawick being the principal contributor with 37, while Bull returned 21, Louisson 10 not out, and Bennett 10. Bowling for Kia Toa, Wasley took four wickets for 32 runs and Peck three for 15. In their reply, Kia Toa ran up the good total of 241 for the loss of three wickets, Peck being unbeaten at the cessation of play with 131 to his credit, while G. Wasley had contributed 54 and Evans 24. It would accordingly seem as though Kia Toa will prove capable of forcing a four-point win on the resumption. y.M.C.A. V. PALMERSTON. Playing at Terrace End Park, Y.M.C.A. reached a winning position when they ran up a total of 213 against Palmerston, G. Griggs topping the returns with 49, and Riley making 31, W. Penman and Burne 27 each, MeMinn 20 not out, G. Cameron 16 and Allan 15. Bowling for Palmerston, Roberts took three wickets for 36 runs and Quigan three for 61. At the cessation of play, Palmerston had lost four wickets for 57 runs, Winnard having been responsible for 33 and Quigan 10.

JUNIOR B. U.S.C. A v. OLD'BOYS. In the one-day games in the junior B. division, Unemployed Sports Club’s A team enjoyed a comfortable win over Old Boys B. The latter eleven had first use of the wicket to compile 131, Guinness making 38, Connell 30, Pirie 24, Grant 13 and B. O’Keefe 10. Webby trundled well for U.S.C. A, taking six wickets for 33 runs. In their rejily, U.S.C. A run up 292, R. Weston retiring after making 108, while Wagg. Matson and Mortensen also retired after making 46, 27 and 23 respectively. Brown and Bulford also returned totals of 23, while Fenton made 14. A DRAWN GAME.

Y.M.C.A. B, who have been holding the leading position, had to be content with sharing the championship points with Massey College. The latter eleven compiled 192 (Johnston 44, Corkill 43, Friedericks 30, Campbell 28, Cooper and Murdoch 12 each and Suckling 11 not out), Collis bowled well for Y.M.C.A., taking four wickets for 10 runs. In a race against time, Y.M.C.A. B could only muster 89 for the loss of five wickets (Collis 33, Marshall 28 and Bowles 12), and the three points were divided. Bowling for Massey College, Rudolph took two wickets for two runs and Corkill two for 19. MID-WEK MATCHES. The following are the cricket fixtures for Wednesday : —U.S.C. A (m.) v. P.D.C., No. 1 wicket; Combined Services A v. Optimists, No. 2 wicket; Combined Services B v. U.S.C. B, No. 3 wicket. TOWiS v. COUNTRY. ALTERATIONS IN TEAM. The .sole selector of the Country eleven (Mr A. M. Ongley) has found if necessary to make further alterations in the team to oppose Town at Wellington on Wednesday. McGirr (Nelson, and originally of Wellington), who was to have captained the side, is not now available, and Lambert (Hawke’s Bay) will lead the team. To fill the vacancy caused by McGirr’s defection, Chadwick (Hawke’s Bay) will go into the side, while G. Robertson (Manawatu) will now be twelfth man.
