DISTRICT NURSE
APPOINTMENT AT FOXTON. REQUEST TO BOARD. Stating that it was impossible for them to pay for medical services, that it cost 7s to come to Palmerston North and back, and that there was no such thing as working a day for food, light, gas, etc., everything having to be paid for in cash, Mr E. G. Martin, honorary secretary of the Foxton Relief Workers’. Association, wrote asking" the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday if a district nurse could be appointed to attend to the unemployed at Foxton. The chairman (Mr J. K. Hornblow) said that some relief had already been given but something was really required. It was raising a big question. The district nurse at Shannon had done wonderful work, with the result that both the health of the people and the finances of the institution had benefited. He suggested that a meeting be convened at noxton to ascertain what contributions would be available towards the appointment of a district nurse.
Mr G. Monk said the position at Foxton was not on all fours with that at Shannon, whei-e there was not a medical officer. He suggested that representatives of the board meet representatives of the bodies interested in the appointment of a district nurse at Foxton.
The chairman said that some time ago a meeting was held in Foxton, but unfortunately the impression gained ground that the appointment of a district nurse had nothing to do with the Hospital Board. “We want to know what the townspeople of Foxton are prepared to do,” stated Mr Monk. It was decided to reply to the writer of the letter suggesting that the Mayor of Foxton be asked to convene a meeting of those interested in the proposal.
