ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH
PATRONAL FESTIVAL. The patronal festival of All Saints’ Church was celebrated yesterday. There were two celebrations of Holy Communion in the morning, Festal Evensong marking the conclusion of the day., which was celebrated most fittingly, while the attendance was excellent at each service. Special music was rendered at the evening service, the choirs from Takaro, Terrace End, Feilding and Wanganui assisting All Saints’ choir with appropriate hymns, and also rendered the anthem, “I Will Magnify Thee.” Canon F. H. Petrie (Feilding) conducted the service, the assisting clergy being tbe vicar, Canon G. Y. Woodward, Revs. J C. A. Zimmerman and F. O. Ball.
Rev. D. J. Davies, B.Sc., vicar of St. Peter’s, Terrace End, delivered the address, taking as his text, “I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” Mr Davies stressed the fact that the Church made its own contribution on social problems, and in seeking for a high standard of living went to the centre of the problem —the quality of human nature itself. There was no suggestion that the Church was indifferent to external circumstances, but only anxious for a better world, which was only possible through better men —by considering character, not conditions.
Tlxe choir sang the hymn, “Hark! the Sound of Holy Voices,” in procession round the church, and the service concluded with the singing of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah” (Handel) before the altar, and the Sevenfold Amen, Mr J. Holmes Runnicles conducting and presiding at the organ. Mr A. Skerman, who now resides at Rangiotu and who is an old and valued member of the church, attended last evening’s service.
