Mr Rowland Bailey, of Wellington, who is visiting Palmerston North, is the guest of Mr M. Millar, of Amesbury Street. Mrs J. G. Cobbe is reported to be making an excellent recovery from her recent severe operation and it is expected that she will be able to return to her home in Feilding in about two weeks’ time.
For family reasons involving his departure for Melbourne in a few weeks’ time, Rev. James M. Smeetli has tendered his resignation as minister of the United Congregational Church, Dunedin. Mr C. S. Hamlin, of Rongotea, who left the Dominion in May to visit his home town of Stroud, in England, and also inspected the French war theatre, returned home this week after a short stay in Australia. Rev. E. Goring, of the Brooklyn (Wellington) Baptist Church, arrived in Palmerston North this afternoon. During his stay over the week-end he will be the guest of Mr and Mrs W. G. Wilby, of Lombard Street. Rev. David Calder, 8.A., Dominion secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, is visiting Palmerston North for tiie annual meeting of the Mana.watu Auxiliary. He is the guest of Mrs J. R. Wood, Princess Street. Mr F. W. Furby, chief postmaster at Palmerston North, left this afternoon on his way south to take up his duties as chief postmaster at Christchurch. He was accompanied by Mrs Furby. Mr D. Black, who has held the position of chief postmaster at Gisborne and takes Mr Furby’s position, arrived in Palmerston North today.
Last evening’s meeting of the Palmerston North Garden Circle decided that a letter should be written to the president (Mr F. J. Nathan) expressing the sympathy of the members with him in his indisposition and hoping for his speedy recovery. Although Mr Nathan does not expect to be about again for some time he is progressing satisfactorily. The death occurred at Wanganui yesterday afternoon of Mr Clifford Marshall, a prominent Wanganui resident. He was born in New Plymouth in 1859. Mr Marshall served his articles under the late Mr S. T. Fitzherbert and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1832, joining Mr Fitzherbert in partnership in 1885. He was prominent in the opening up of native lands and was connected with other land devolpment schemes. He was appointed Crown Prosecutor in 1905 and held this office with distinction until 1927, when he retired.
