RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) This year the New and Melbourne Cups will not clash, the latter coming in a week later. The Paper Money colt Invoice was a disappointment in his only start at Trentham, but he may makes amends at Riccarton. K. Voitre’s successes in the saddle at Trcntham brought him some £93 in riding fees. A. H. Eastwood followed him with £67. Melbourne reports state that Limarch’s heob is still causing his trainer some anxiety. Limarch is a V.R.G. Derby possibility. Lovecourt ran good races at Wellington and, placed to advantage, should earn some stake money. Unfortunately, she is rather small. Admiral Drake has been nominated for the Auckland Cup, a race he won two years ago, so P. T. Hogan apparently hopes to get him back to racing pitch. Sailing Home, like others of the Solferiuo family, is getting more solid with age. Foaled in 1926, ne registered his best race to date when he won at the Gore meeting on Labour Day. On Tuesday, at Riccarton, Polydora finished in front of Minerval at the end of seven furlongs in 1.29 3-seec—the last four in 5.1 4-ssecs. Polydora is the ruling favourite for the New Zealand Cup. Messrs Simpson and Doyle, two southern sportsmen, have purchased Final Shot from Sir Charles Clifford, and the three-year-old daughter of Winning Hit and Rivalry has joined Mrs J. Campbell’s stable at Riccarton. BETTING SYSTEMS. WIN AND PLACE. The present allocation of dividends on the place totalisator is not gaining in popularity; indeed, it appears, to be steadily losing ground, and it is time the regulations were made more elastic to give provincial clubs power to vary the distribution of the pool. Some southern clubs have returned to the old system, but it is • doubtful whether this is altogether wise, for the majority of backers are prepared to stake at least a portion of their investment on the win machine and the retention of this - system would be acceptable. The unsatisfactory feature about the present system is the meagre dividend returned on the place machine by a horse who may be strongly supported. Although lie may have been capable of winning, his dividend probably falls far short of a lesser fancied candidate who might well have been an indifferent third. There is not the reward offering to the patrons who are “on the mark.” A southern writer suggests that at least half the amount now allotted to the third horses should be transferred to tho winners and that a 60 —25 —15 payout would do much to restore the new system to favour. This would certainly be a much fairer basis of recompense than tho present 33 1-3 per. cent to each of. the three placed performers whore the fields are sufficiently largo to permit of three place-dividends to be paid.. The retention of tho win pool is essential, but without doubt a change in tho place-betting system would be welcomed by the majoritv. After all, why should backers of a horse which runs third take an equal share of the pool with those who supported the winner? It has driven many modest backers to the win machine, where they have but the one chance, instead of encouraging the small bettor to take tho safer course by investing on the place machine. BALTIMORE, Oct. 26. Some exports attribute Winooka’s poor showing in part to the apparent stage fright of his jockey Britt who was not familiar with the ways and styles of the American jockeys. The consensus of opinion is .that Winooka will give a vastly superior display on Friday. Winooka came out for Wednesday s race in good condition, according to his trainer, Poison. He was short on racing condition, and they have decided to give him plenty of work. “I know Winooka can do much better,” he said.
