WORK IN THE COUNTRY
demand for men. INQUIRIES IN THE NORTH. Per Press Association, v AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. In order to ascertain the number of men eligible for country work who can l»s sent to various camps without inflicting hardship on themselves or their families the Labour Department is carrying out a general stock-taking in various Auckland districts where relief labour is employed. ■ The men are called up for medical examination in the first place and it they are found to be fit for country work they are asked to give reasons •why they should not be drafted to the country. If there arc satisfactory ie*isons they will be retained in the city or suburbs, but if not they will b~ drafted to the country. ~ A Labour Department official said to-day that large numbers of men were required at present in the country for ragwort eradication. liie county councils found that not sufficient men were available in their areas anti they were applying to the city almost daiiy. This was an important national work and every man who could ba sent to the country was needed. The preparatory work for the Government s small farm scheme and the ordinary seasonal work were also increasing tlie demand for labour.
