RAILWAY RETURNS.
ENGLISH PASSENGER INCREASE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 26. The change over irom standard fares to-day, half-day, and period excursion fares on the British railways has resulted, during the first half of the current year, in a considerable increase in passenger traffic. Passenger journeys made in the period, excluding season ticket holders, totalled 524,738,215, representing an increase of 1,978,709 on the corresponding period of 1932. Passenger receipts during the first six months of this _ year, . however, showed a slight decline. The total was £21,385,182, being £161,278 below the total for the corresponding period of last year. IN NEW SOUTH WALES. loss foiTyear. SYDNEY, Sept. 27. The New South Wales railways showed a loss for tlio year ended June 30 of £3,360,482, after allowing £6,352,581 for interest'on capital outlay and £1,191.937 for exchange. The figures disclose an improvement for the year of £1,204,123, despite freight and other reductions.
