PERSONAL.
The Governor-General and the Lady Bledisloe left Wellington last evening for a short visit to Christchurch, where they will undertake a series of official engagements. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington on Tuesday morning next. Hon. Sir James Allen, M.L.C., was granted three days’ leave of absence on account of private business at the sitting of the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. Sir Stephen S. Allen (chairman) and Mr H. B. S. Johnstone, members of the Central Transport Licensing Authority which has been sitting in Palmerston North, left for Wellington this afternoon accompanied by the clerk, Mr A. N. Hitggitt. The authority will sit in Wellington to-morrow and then proceeds to the South Island. Mr W. Schicrning, who has been representing the Railway Department at the sitting, has also returned to Wellington. After being in New Zealand since 1876, nearly 40 years of which time lie has spent at Dannevirke, Mr Samuel Sebastopol Quinn has left on his way to County Tipperary, Ireland, the land of his birth. Mr Quinn’s trip is necessitated by the death of his brother some 12 months ago. Both he and his wife, Lady Stanhope, died without issue, and Mr S. S. Quinn, being next of kin, is a substantial beneficiary from his brother’s estate. Mr Quinn is 78 years of age and has no relatives in the Dominion.
