SMALL FARMS ACT.
COMPULSORY PROVISIONS. WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. An indication that the Government might have occasion to put the compulsory clauses of the Small Farms (Relief of Unemployment) Act into operation was given by the Minister of Lands, Hon. E. A. Ransom, when replying to a question asked by Mr T. D. Burnett in the-House of Representatives to-day. Mr Burnett asked whether, in view of the growing demand in Canterbury for small holdings of from 20 to 50 acres, and the marked disinclination ou the part of landowners to lease areas under the Act, the Minister would make a statement as to the Government’s intentions. Mr Ransom said the Government would take into consideration the necessity of puttinu the compulsory clauses if the Act into operation, and if necessary would purchase lands instead of proceeding by way of lease.
