WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE.

YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. There was considerable activity in tho Wellington market yesterday following tho holiday on Blonday. Trading was heav}-, 29 sales being recorded during the day. the whole tho market was fairly steady at about last week’s closing rates. Keener interest was shown yesterday in Government loans, which were firm on an active demand with few sellers showing. The only trading was in 3£ per cent, stocks, the 1939-43 maturity quitting at £IOO 5s and the 1938-52 at £lOl ss. In tho debenture section Wellington Racing Club, 8 per cents., were firm at £95. In the bank section, Now Zealand ordinaries did tho bulk of the business. Prices were irregular at 45s to 45s 9d, with late buyers in at the latter figure. National of New Zealand sold firmly at 86s, as did New South Wales at £33 15s. Australasias were wanted at £l2 12s 6d, sellers holding for £l3 Is. Other banks wero steady at late rates. Pastoral company shares wore in firm demand. Goldshrough Blort.s sold on change at 29s Bd. Offers of £lO 9s for Dalgetys had no response, and holders of National Mortgage made no reply to bids of 49s 6d for tho A’s and 27s for B’s, Now Zealand Loan and Blcrcantile ordinary stock firmed to £6O, sellers asking £6B. There was activo trading in insurance shares at firm rates. Nationals wero done at _ 18s, New Zealands at 55s 3d, South British at 74s 6d, and Standards at 61s 4u. Meat shares were in good demand at steady prices; New Zealand Refrigerating Contributing selling at 9s 9d. New Zealand Breweries wore firmer, sales being made at 35s 9d and 36s 6d (2), late buyers staying in at the latter price. There was a strong tone in the miscellaneous section. Electrolytic Zinc, preference, sold at 33s 9d, Sharland ordinary at 21s 9d, Wilson’s Cement at 35s 7jd and Woolworths (N.Z.), preference, at 365. Gold mining shares were less active.
