NAVY AT WORK.

AUSTRALIAN CRUISERS LEAVE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. A ball given by Rear-Admiral R. C. Dalglish and bis officers on H.M.A.S. Canberra to-night brought to a close a long programme of entertainment in connection with the visit of the Australian Naval Squadron to Wellington. The two. cruisers Canberra and Australia are timed to sail for Cook Strait at 3.30 p.m. to-morrow, and they will carry out strategic exercises in conjuration with two vessels of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, me Dunedin and Diomede. At the conclusion of the manoeuvres in Cook Strait the two Australian criusers will sail for Jervis Bay at noon and will proceed from there to Sydney, being due there on October 6. On the cruise across the Tasman gunnerv and torpedo exercises will be carried out and both vessels will also udorgo a full power trial to see what speed can be attained. . "• A MOCK BATTLE. Using the New Plymouth harbour as a base, the Fairey Royal Air Force seaplane, from Hobsonvilie, will set out to spy tlio position of the ships of the Australian Squadron returning to Jervis Bay. The seaplane will wireless the position of the squadron to the New Zealand warships, Dunedin and Diomede, and a mock battle will follow, the seaplane remaining in the vicinity to assist in “spotting” the Australians.
