DAIRY INSTRUCTION

SEVERAL NOTABLE CHANGES. LOCAL OFFICER FOR LONDON. Mr G M Valentine, dairy instructor at Massey College, has received notice of his transfer to the position of assistant to the Inspector of Dairy Produce, London, the term being one vear. Mr Valentine has not yet received advice as to the date on which he is to be relieved of Ins .duties at Massey College. Mr J. W. Smith, dairy instructor of Whangarei, who was formerly a Palmerston North resident, has been appointed to Mr Valentino’s position at Massey College. Mr G V Were, who is now dairy instructor for the Hawke’s Bay and Wellington provinces, has been advised of his transfer to the position of instructor for the North Auckland Province, taking the position held by Mr Smith. For the last five and a half years Mr Valentine has been a member of the college staff in his present position, coming from the Auckland district. He was then dairy instructor in charge of that district, being stationed at Auckland. Mr Valentine was in Palmerston North for five years from 1893, being then a member of the Farmers Dairy Union staff. He joined the Department of Agriculture in 1912 and since that time has been stationed in the South Island, Taranaki, Auckland and a number of other districts. The scheme under which Mr Valentine is going to England is one instituted several years ago to enable the experts of the dairy industry in New Zealand to obtain first-hand practical knowledge of tho requirements of the distributing houses and consumers at Home. Mr E. C. Woods was the first instructor sent Home under the sclmme and Mr Were the second, and Mr Valentine will thus be the third. Mr Smith is a keen sportsman, having taken a great interest in football when he was stationed in Palmerston North as dairy instructor, and also being a keen bowler. He left Palmerston. North about- two years ago. He recently undertook a tour of Australian dairy districts, where he investigated dairying methods. Mr Smith was manager of the Riverbank Co-operative Dairy Company, Ngawapurua, Woodville, for several years and while there won many awards for both butter a.nd cheese exhibits. He has been advised that he is to take over his duties at Massey College early in October.
