RUGBY FOOTBALL.

SCHOOL COMPETITIONS FINALISED. CONVENT AND TERRACE END WIN. The primary schools Rugby competions were finalised yesterday when the season’s honours went to Convent in the senior division and Terrace End in the junior, the latter school furnishing the runners-up also. This afternoon would also determine whether Terrace End or College Street are to be the holders of the Millar and Giorgi Cup as the winners of the midget competition staged in conjunction with the Manawatu Rugby Union’s inter-club competitions each Saturday. On Thursday the senior teams of Central and College Street met, when the former school gained the day by six points to five. This reverse left College Street on terms with Convent and a play-off became necessary. The match was played yesterday, when Convent won by five points to three. Farrington registered Convent’s one crossing, to which Hooker added the major points, while Andrews contributed College Street’s three points per medium of a penalty goal. Convent thus become the holders of the shield —their third trophy for the winter season, as they had previously won the Pirani Shield (seven-a-side" Rugby) and the soccer championship. The junior final was fought out by the A and B representatives of the Terrace End School and ,as was not altogether unexpected, the vastly improved B fifteen reproduced their winning form to carry the day by 3 —o. Kitching was the contributor. He had previously kicked through to wards the opposing goal line where a melee ensued from which he forced his way over to complete the effort. At one stage of the season the A team had promised to he the winners, but by sheer determination the B team proved capable of beating the supposedly stronger force at their last two meetings. The composition of the rival combinations in the final was: B team: H. Williams, V. Henderson, G. Allen, G. Young, G. Arlidge, Iv. Hardie, G. Mutch, N. Hardie, Pryor, Grant, Nash, Kitching, Caiman, Robert, Ellery (capt.). A team: L. Cook, AV. Henderson, A. Stewart, R. Smith, R. Arnott, D. Duncalf (capt.), C. Jamieson, Parkes, Todd. J. Roots, Thompson, E. Gadsby, F. Honey, W. Wilson, Cudby. THE MIDGETS. The midget series, which have been an interesting feature of the schools activities, found three teams still in the running and, with only to-day left for competition play under the direction of the Manawatu Rugby Union matters were expedited during tire week by having Terrace End and Hokowhitu meet in the semi-final. A good even game found the former school win the right to participate in the final with . College Street at the Showgrounds this afternoon, G. Mutch gaining the one try from a melee on line. Speaking at the Rugby Union’s jubilee dinner, Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, said that it was almost certain a New Zealand team would go to Australia next year on the occasion of the New South Wales’'Union’s jubilee. That would mean a return visit in 1935, which would be. of immense value, because New Zealand had another mission to England in 1936. He was sure that when the team for England was chosen there would be material to provide a combination equal to those of 1905 and 1924. Rugby to-day was just as good as ever it was.
