VESSEL IN GALE.

DAMAGE TO FREIGHTER. AUCKLAND, Sept. 12. Safely berthed to-day, the American cargo steamer Golden Rod bears unmistakable evidence of the tempestuous weather she encountered when approaching the New Zealand coast. For 16 hours the freighter was hove to in the gale outside Cuvier Island. At about four o’clock yesterday morning a sea carried away the meathouse, situated amidship on the port side of the vessel. With the meathouse disappeared choppers, grinders, and a [quantity of meat. Another sea wrenched a large ventilator from its socket and smashed part of the ship’s gangway at the after end of the vessel. The seas trashed some of the deck cargo of sawn timber out of position. Two of the crew suffered minor injuries.
