RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) It is reported that Polydora will be trained for the New Zealand Cup. Antrim Boy is reported from the south to have changed hands. He will be quartered at Timaru in futuro. Praise (Limond —Eulogy), winner of the New Zealand Oaks of 1930, foaled a filly foal to Iliad last week. The cognomen of Cupbearer has been claimed for Mr J. M. Samson’s two-year-old sister to La Poupee, by Tea Tray from Dancing Doll. Chang, who is on the easy list at present, is to do his future racing over the battens—a department in which ho has already shown promise. The Polazel filly Caliente is now quartered at Ellerslie. Although she can gallop, this filly is somewhat on the small side.

It is stated in the south that T. Lloyd mny essay to win the New Zealand Cup with Tout le Mond and train Gay Crest for the Auckland Cup. The New Zealand horses Dole,. Movie Star, Bay Aero, and Panjandrum have been withdrawn from the Epsom Handicap, while Bay Acre, Movie Star, Panjandrum and Persian have dropped out of the Metropolitan Handicap. Australian reports mention that Movie Star was being educated to hurdling and was being put over the brush fences. Ho had an outing in public with Alan McDonald in the saddle on ■ Saturday, but came to grief. The name Seven Seas has been selected for the two-year-old Spear Dance—Rehutai gelding in R. Olive’s charge at Ellerslie. He is stated to be a sturdy 3 r oungster whose progress will be followed with interest.

Chide’s two-year-old sister Orris and Liege Lord, who were to have taken their places in the Dunedin Guineas and MoLean Stakes, are now stated to be unlikely starters. They have both been suffering from colds. Solomon, who scored convincingly in the Juvenile Handicap at. Te Rapa in March last season, is not being hurried in liia preparation at Ellerslie. When up to concert pitch he should not fail to pay his way in hack classes. Arises bled in his race at the hunt fixture at Wanganui and it is understood that Mr L. G. Paul does not intend to race him again. All Supreme went amiss on the eve of the hunt fixture and has not been on the tracks since.

H. Dulieu, who made a start recently as a trainer at Ellerslie with Prince Colossus, has had his team strengthened by the addition of Matorni, a three-year-old by Paper Money from the English-bred mare Santaline. Matorni finished fourth in the Opunake Scurry at New Plymouth. Mr V. Riddiford’s black colt by Hunting Song from Merit, who was bred at Eldcrslio, where he has been broken in and looked after by Mr Ken Austin, arrived at Trentham on Saturday morning. The youngster, who has been called Whyte Melville, has linked up with S. J. Reid’s team.

Mr E. A. Connolly had not decided when the last mail left Melbourne whether liis Night Raid colt Wheriko would be a runner in the A.J.C. Derby, though it was considered likely. Wheriko is described as probably the biggest three-year-old in training in Melbourne. He is nearer 17 hands than 16, but is a rare-made colt. He should make a great four-year-old. Phiakuo has returned to the tracks at Te Ra,pa after a brief absence necessitated through a slight chill. All going well with H. Tinker’s charge he will be started at Avondale next month. The Acre—Miss Vera colt, who is receiving his education at the hands of A. Gilmer, at To Rapa, is stated to be a promising looking three-year-old, 'who should not fail to pay expenses when called upon to sport silk later in the season. Included among the Te Rapa contingent to be worked during the past week were Glonade, Curlew, and a half-brother to High Commissioner by Callaghan from Little Footsteps. Travelling Agent is the name selected for the last-named who has shown considerable aptitude in his schooling trials over the pony fences.

HORSES OF THE PAST.

“CARBINE THE BEST.” Writing on “Horses of To-Day and Yesterday,” Mr F. J. Ilinde, of Newcastle, sent the following letter to a Sydney paper.-—"ln my opinion the record of Kinscem, the Hungarian wonder mare, is outstanding among racehorses. This great mare ran in 54 races without a defeat, and beat tho best English, German, and French horses. . . . There is no doubt that the horses to-day cannot stand up to tho racing privations which the old-timers were subjected to, and the sole reason is the present-day craze for speed, which, together with the Tod Sloane seat, is mainly responsible for tho difference recorded in the times of races, also the improved tracks and more scientific training methods contribute toward this fact. Take, for instance, Archer’s two Melbourne Cups in 1861-2. In the former he carried 9st 71bs and ran the distance in 3m 525, while in 1862 he put up an additional 91b and reduced his previous time by five seconds; also, from 1861 to 1881, the race record was reduced by 20 seconds. Surely one would not attribute this fact to the evolution of the breeding of the racehorse in a space of 20. years. To Carbine stands the credit of winning two races in the one day on four different occasions. Heroic tried it on one occasion, but failed in both races. Phar Lap had the opportunity of also performing this feat, but his connections did not avail themselves of it. I do not think that even Carbine would be successful in attempting this feat under our present race conditions. . . I have yet to be convinced why the horses of Carbine’s day would not have been victorious in our races of to-day, given the same style of riding, tracks, and the more scientific

method of training. Certainly time records do not show it. Carbine was a champion at all stages of his career, whereas Phar Lap was not. . . Do not think .that I am of the opinion that Phar Lap was not a brilliant racehorse, for ho was all that, and though comparison will always bring forth arguments Carbine’s performances made him, in my opinion, th’e best Australian racehorse.”

Silver Scorn is now very fit and is expected to justify her New Zealand reputation shortly. Autopay is still under a cloud. Tho New Zealanders, Bay Tree, Gottesmore, Ivorokio, Deputy Ruler, Golden Hair, Ammon Ra, Closing Time, Persian and Safari, are all likely to take part in the- mid-week meeting at Rosebery tomorrow.
